The Cup of Tea

One glass. Carried to a table, taken away, washed, refilled — and every time it comes back, the man waiting at the table is ten years older. Water, then beer, then whisky. A daisy, then a rose, then an orchid, then nothing at all.

He is fifteen and his hands are sweating. He is forty-five and he does not stand up when she arrives.

“Are you ready, Mom?”
“Yes, my son. Let’s go see your father…”
